The Tender Years of APMB: 1986 - 2007

THE TENDER YEARS: 1986-1989

The Anderson Premier Military Band (APMB) that exists today is the 3rd generation of school bands of the Anderson Secondary School Ipoh.

ImageThe first band, which was a Cadet and Drum Corp, was founded in the 1960s.

Later, another band emerged in the mid 70’s and lasted till mid 80’s.

The APMB today started out just as a Recorder & Drum Band back in 1986.

First band teacher advisor, Ms Linda Chong, who is currently the Senior Assistant II of SK Perempuan Methodist, Ipoh, selected about 10-15 students to attend a music lesson.

Then, she hand-picked out the best few, 9 to be precised, for a performance for the annual school speech day.

The little cute and adorable kiddos performed the famous “Shanghai Beach” and some other Malay numbers that day…Little did they realize that they actually became the Pioneer members of the Anderson Premier Military Band!

The School Principal then was Tuan Haji Ahmad Zainuddin Bin Othman (who retired as the Pengarah Pendidikan Perak in December 2002).

He was very pleased with the performance of these fellow students.

Well, as a music lover himself, the man took initiative in having extra meetings with Ms Linda Chong to discuss the feasibility of having an Anderson School Band.

With that, Ms Chong started the planning for the formation of the band.

However… she faced a big problem … FUNDS!!!! Therefore, Ms Chong started to look at the old instruments of previous two generation bands.

With a very determined mind set, Ms Chong searched for all the old stuffs left behind by our… “ancestors”..

Whoa-la!!! She managed to get hold of a set of Premier drums which were still in good condition, except for the drum-skins, of course...The only other instruments that were able to be salvaged were the Trumpets.

Then donations started to come in and we managed to upgrade our band into a Trumpet and Drum band in 1988.

THE TENDER YEARS: 1990-1992

ImageThe Anderson Band in the new decade (1990) grew in membership intake.

With about 20 new juniors, the total membership became 45.

This was also the year where the band purchased the new Tenor Trio to improve the variation of beats of the percussion section.

We also salvaged some more bass instruments that we found from some ancient tomb beneath the dungeon in the hall... Nah, just the old store room! They were the Euphonium and Baritone and 2 more trombones.

The band was crowned the Best Uniformed Unit of the school in this year!

THE TENDER YEARS: 1992

ImageThe year 1992 opened a new chapter for the band.

This is because there were 30 new members recruited.

We have also started the Fife section for these new juniors.

In addition to that, the first Band Exhibition was held.

Performances included the National Youth Day (Hari Belia), where the Guest of Honour was former Malaysian Prime Minister, Tun Dr.Mahathir Mohamed; Sports Day, National Day and Teacher’s Day.

IN 1992, we also participated in the Young Band Festival organised by Yamaha Music School.

We managed to bag a bronze for the Trumpet & Drum category.

We also organized the Annual Band Camp, and the 1st Fellowship Night was held.

The Percussion Section emerged Best Section 1992!

THE TENDER YEARS: 1993

ImageIn 1993 new recruits increased. Performances included the launch of the National Cyclethon event, National Anti-Dadah Day, Sports Day, Teachers’ Day, National Day Parade and Hari Unit Beruniform.

Two musical camps were organized this year.

One in the mid term holidays, and one more during the year end holidays.

This was also the first year the band conducted its anniversary - the 7th Anniversary of the band during the Mid Term Band Camp.

THE METAMORPHORSIS YEARS: 1996

Image1996 is a memorable year for the Anderson Brass Band.

This was because, we celebrated our 10th Anniversary during the Annual Musical Camp.

Ex-member cum instructor, Mr. Alan Thoo composed the anniversary song, entitled Sentiasa.

The lyrics was written by the committee members of the band.

This was also the year Mr Thoo returned to the band and became the instructor of the band.

THE METAMORPHOSIS YEARS: 1997

ImageIn the year 1997, the band organized a mini concert and Band Exhibition in January.

This project was aimed at bringing in more new members to the band.

In April, the band performed for the school sports day. In May, the band was invited to perform for Hari Pelancaran Sukan Karnival UMNO Bahagian Ipoh Barat.

We also made history when we performed for the opening ceremony of the National FA Cup Finals between Selangor and Penang in our very own Stadium Perak, live on national television, TV3.

Then, in October 1997, teacher advisor Ms Linda Chong left us as she was promoted to be the Senior Assistant of SJK Perak, Ipoh.

Ms Chong guided and taught the school band for a total number of 11 years!!! As the teacher advisor, she has taught us many values in the past that we would not be able to forget..

These included very strict discipline, manners, initiative and hard work. With all those, we managed to instill the sense of wisdom in all of us.

Pn Zalilah Bte Mohd Sulaiman replaced Ms Chong as the official teacher advisor of the band.

She was a very dedicated teacher, not to mention caring and understanding too.

THE TURNING POINT: 1998

ImageIn 1998, the band began changing its management styles and structure.

With a very determined and “Never-Yielding” spirit, we marched forward by having a whole change of image.

Thus, we launched the Premier Project on the 24th of January 1998.

The Premier Project changed the band in almost every aspect.

This included the changing of our name, from the Anderson Brass Band, to… The Anderson Premier Brass Band (APBB).

In addition to that, we changed our logo too.

We also changed our band uniform to a vibrant blue colour and added a motto to our band… “One Rhythm One Heart” (Satu rentak Satu Hati).

The most important part of the Premier Project, Y.Bhg Dato’ Mohd Nor Khalid (or better known to all of us as Dato’ Lat), became the Patron of the Anderson Premier Brass Band.

Dato’ Lat, a well known cartoonist not only in Malaysia, but also overseas, took the band as his “Anak Angkat” and assisted us in funding and guidance in leadership too.

With the brand new image... The APBB began venturing into many projects to raise funds for the band.

We organized dozens of projects that caught the highlights of the press.

One of them was the launch of our APBB notice board and web-site by ex-Andersonian cum National Badminton Player, Mr Lee Wan Wah.

THE BIRTH OF APMB: 1999

Image1999 was another year of success for the APMB.

We organized several big projects and took part in competitions and gatherings too.

One of these functions was the Charity Concert organized by the Leo Clubs of Ipoh (Omega) and Sultan Idris Shah, Gopeng.

We were featured in this charity concert and the function was held in the Gopeng Town Hall.

From the funds from the Musical Variety Show in 1998, the band purchased woodwind instruments and upgraded itself to a military band status.

Hence, the Anderson Premier Military Band was formed! The band also organized the 13th Anniversary Celebrations in the school hall.

It was then when patron of the band, Dato LAT, launched the Anderson Premier Military Band.

In March, we were invited to perform in Parit, Perak, for the stars of Hollywood produced movie… Anna & The King.

This was a surprised performance for the main stars, Academy Award Winner, Jodie Foster and Hong Kong superstar, Chow Yuen Fatt.

THE NEW MILLENNIUM CHALLENGE: 2001

ImageIn January 2001, we attended a Hari Raya Jamuan hosted by Band Patron, Dato’ Lat in his residence.

The APMB then celebrated our 15th Anniversary in the Old Andersonians Club Ipoh.

The function was attended by members of the band, ex-members of the band as well as members of SMK Perempuan Methodist Military Band and SMK St.Anthony Military Band.

This anniversary marked 2 great accounts in the history of the APMB. Firstly, we launch the Anderson Band Ex-Member Association (ABEX) and secondly the three bands became sister bands.

The ABEX is an official association registered with the Registrar of Societies.

Founder of the ABEX is none other than Mr Alan Thoo, ex-instructor of the APMB.

Later this year, the APMB assisted sister band St Anthony Military Band to hold its very own concert in the Anderson School Hall.

Themed St Anthony & Friends in Concert, the APMB and MGS bands performed with the Anthonians in the afternoon concert that attracted a crowd no less than 500 students and parents.

In this year, the APMB performed for various performances that included the Annual Sports and Speech Day; National Day Parade and many others.

This year also saw Mr Eric Chee, former bassist of the APMB taking over Mr John Goh (former Trumpeter of APMB) as the official Band Instructor of the band.

THE NEW MILLENNIUM CHALLENGE: 2002

Image“A leader in Anderson School’s major student activities… the Anderson Premier Military Band has achieved great heights ever since its formation 16 years ago….”

Those were the very distinctive compliments from the former Principal of the Anderson School, Tuan Haji Sharuddin Bin Mat Asik, mentioned in his opening speech for the 16th Annviersary Celebration of the school band on the 9th of February 2002.

On the 26th of July 2002, Teh Kee Soon organized the Musical Variety Show 4 in Ipoh City Hall.

The band's trend of songs switched from 6/8 marches to overtures.

We played Swearingen's pieces like Centuria, Romanesque and Seagate Overture.

The concert managed to beat the previous record (MMVS) and the band raised approximately RM32 000!

Later that year, Yamaha Instructor from Japan, Mitsui Nonami San visited the band and conducted a two-day class.

After the National Day Parade, the band invited examiners to conduct tutorial classes on the subjects Bahasa Malaysia, Science and English for our PMR and SPM members.

THE NEW MILLENNIUM CHALLENGE: 2003

ImageWith Stf Sgt Teh Kee Soon leading a strong team, the band started the year with lots of recruitment for new juniors.

Then, we celebrated the 17th Anniversary of the Anderson Premier Military Band in the school hall.

Following that, the band performed a splendid formation for the sports day in March.

On the 31st of May, the band assisted sister band, Anthonian Military Band of Teluk Intan to put up their second concert in Teluk Intan.

The most exciting thing for the band in 17 years is that Discovery Channel of Asia (On Astro) wanted to shoot the band in practice.

We appeared live on Astro Discovery Channel for that performance during a documentary on patron, Dato Lat.

This was our second appearance on TV, and also a second International performance (first was Anna & the King in 1999).

On the 31st of August, the band participated in the annual National Day Parade held in Sitiawan this time.

The band then performed for the Anderson School Old Boys Assocition (ASOBA) of Kuala Lumpur in the Prince Hotel on the 19th of September.

The APMB closed the year with the annual band camp and Fellowship Nite at the end of December.

THE NEW MILLENNIUM CHALLENGE: 2004

ImageThe year 2004 started out with a n agrresive membership drive that saw an increase in the Junior membership of the APMB in January.

Later in February, some members attended the Farewell Ceremony of sister band, Anthonian Military Band of Teluk Intan.

In March, we took part in the annual school's sports day and also performed for the Teacher's Day Celebration in May.

In June, the APMB took a bold step in the organising of the 6th Musical Variety Show.

Another brave attempt, the band held the concert in the Syuen Ballroom of Syuen Hotel in Ipoh, a 50star rated hotel. No bands in Perak have ever attempted such a mega-scaled project before.

The project managed to raise RM 80000, another successful band concert.

In August, the APMB performed for the annual National Day Parade and als organized the Annual Musical Camp at the end of the year.

THE NEW MILLENNIUM CHALLENGE: 2005

ImageThe year 2005 saw the APMB rising as another Finalist in the Annual Band Competition in July 2005.

In the last 19 years the APMB has been playing music... this was the first year the band was accepted into the Finals of the prestigious competition.

President of the Band, Stf. Sgt. Liew Chun Kit led a good year that saw the band performed for the Annual Sports, Teachers Day as well as National Day.

We were also invited to perform for the retirement of a teacher in SMK Main Convent of Ipoh.

Another Challenging Year: 2006

ImageOnce again APMB organized the Musical Variety Show 7 on the 23rd of June 2006 at Syuen Hotel Ballroom. This time, APMB invited Farah, Malaysian Idol 2nd Runner-up as your guest artist for that night.

Thus, performance from DiGi Celebriteen Perak Champion, Joseph Ng and 1st Runner-Up Syarminii R. who rock the entire concert. The night was filled with professional hip hop dancers from KL & Penang...

Cultural & Modern dances and performances and last but not least, our very own Anderson Premier Military Band (APMB) entertained everyone with Modern Marches, Jazz, Pop and classical hits!

The Growing Family: 2007

The band recruited 20 new juniors this year. The passion towards music is an ever-growing course, and our fellow Andersonians proved it so.

The Anderson Band took part in the Annual Band Competition in June 2007, which was held in Anderson schools' very own field. The entire formation was planned at designed by Sargent Kuan Kheen Lke and his form five team.

The year ended with yet another blast of End Year Camp, and our tradiotional Fellowship Nite.
